Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between the Classic, Carbon/Pigment, and Mixable ink lines? +
The three lines differ in ink chemistry, which affects permanence, water resistance, and how much nib cleaning you need. The Classic is iron-gall ink, so it's permanent, archival, and darkens on the page as it oxidizes. The Carbon and Pigment inks, including Carbon Black and Chou Kuro, are water-resistant and archival, but call for diligent cleaning. The Mixable is a dye line built to be blended into custom colors, and the Standard line is the traditional everyday dye ink.
Which Platinum ink is best for everyday writing? +
For a pen you keep inked and in daily rotation, reach for the dye-based Mixable and Standard lines. They flow well, dry reasonably fast, and skip the extra cleaning that the pigment and iron-gall inks ask for. Switch to the Classic iron-gall line instead when you want permanence and a shading effect, and Carbon Black when you need a waterproof black for documents or line work.
Which Platinum inks are waterproof or permanent? +
The pigment inks (Carbon Black, Chou Kuro, and other Pigment colors) are resistant to water and are lightfast. Because the pigment particles lock into the paper, artists and note-takers who value permanence reach for them. The iron-gall Classic line is also permanent and water resistant once it oxidizes on the page. If waterproofing is your mission, you can also browse water-resistant inks across the store.
Do the Classic and pigment inks need special cleaning to protect my pen? +
A little, yes. We recommend flushing iron-gall Classic inks every few weeks. Old iron-gall ink left dormant in a steel nib is the gateway to pen horror stories, so it's best to only use this ink in a pen you write with regularly. Pigment inks like Carbon Black can likewise settle in the feed if a pen sits idle. Used and cleaned regularly, these inks shouldn't cause any trouble, but if you'd rather not think about it, the dye-based Mixable and Standard lines are Platinum's fill-and-forget option.
Can I use Platinum inks in any fountain pen? +
We list the Classic and Carbon Black lines as suitable for all fountain pen brands. What changes by line is the upkeep: iron-gall and pigment inks require regular flushing, while the Mixable and Standard dyes are easygoing. For a vintage pen or anything tricky to take apart and clean, stick with the dye inks.
Why does Platinum Classic ink darken over time? +
The darkening happens when the ink's iron oxidizes when it meets air and paper, so a color like Citrus Black starts bright yellow and shifts to a dark olive, sometimes within seconds. All six colors in this line, from Cassis to Forest to Sepia, start in one shade and settle into a darker one. It makes watching ink dry way more exciting than it sounds.
How can I blend Mixable inks to create custom colors? +
To create your own blended ink, mix your colors in a separate bottle using plastic pipettes or syringes to measure your ratios. Platinum sells a mixing kit for just this process, which you can find on our Platinum accessories page. The system is built around nine base colors, from Cyclamen Pink to Leaf Green, meant to blend only with other Mixable inks. These are dye inks without water resistance, so keep your custom creations away from rain and open beverages.
How long do these inks take to dry? +
The Mixable and Standard dye inks dry fast, with a Mixable shade like Silky Purple setting in as fast as a few seconds on fountain pen-friendly paper. Pigment inks are wetter, so Carbon Black can take 30 seconds or longer to dry fully, though it doesn't smear once it's down. Paper quality, nib width, and the wetness of your pen all shift these drying times, so treat them as estimates. Still hunting for the right bottle?
