What can I put on a custom fountain pen? +
A name, initials, a short message, or a business logo. The practical character limit is around 15 to 20 characters including spaces, which is more room than it sounds like once you see it on a barrel. If your message runs longer and our site won't accept it, put it in the Special Instructions field on your order, and we'll take a look. Sometimes, we can accommodate a larger message in two lines or by including an engraved plate with the pen box. And if a full name simply won't fit, initials or a monogram almost always solve it.
What part of the fountain pen usually gets engraved? +
Depending on the particular pen, it can be engraved on the barrel or the cap. When you click the personalization option on an approved pen, it assigns it to a preset location (usually the cap or the barrel, depending on the pen's material and available surface space). Material matters more than most people expect. Engraving on metal-bodied pens comes out clean and highly visible. On resins or plastics, the mark comes out lighter and lower in contrast, which is why some finishes are excluded from engraving altogether.
What should I engrave on a fountain pen purchased for a gift? +
Initials or a monogram are classic, elegant choices, though it's always smart to consider whether the recipient's last name might change in the future. If that's a possibility, a first name or a meaningful date are foolproof options that remain relevant over time. Or, consider a few words that speak to special occasions, like a graduation, retirement, or major promotion. Because a personalized pen can't be returned, keep the text simple and check the spelling twice before you order. A typo on a pen is permanent in a way a typo almost never is!
What custom fountain pen nib size should I choose when gifting? +
If you're buying for someone whose preferences you don't know, a medium nib is the safe default. It's smooth for most handwriting and forgiving on most paper. Just be aware that Japanese nibs run about a size finer than Western ones, so a Pilot medium writes closer to a Western fine. If you want the broader, wetter line most people picture when they imagine a fountain pen, stay Western or size up.
Which engraved fountain pen makes the best gift? +
We recommend the Pilot Metropolitan when the recipient is new to fountain pens. It writes well while still being accessibly priced as an entry-point to the world of fountain pens, which means a bad first experience is unlikely. The Lamy AL-Star is light, distinctive, and the shaped grip subtly teaches the user how to hold it, which helps someone who hasn't picked up a fountain pen since school. Because of its compact size, the Kaweco AL Sport is a great gift for someone on the go who appreciates a solid but low-weight pen.
Does it cost extra to engrave? +
Yes, engraving a fountain pen costs extra. Standard text engraving costs $9.50 per pen, and signatures are $15 per pen. The price decreases when engraving multiple pens (minimum quantity of 10), and logos are only available in this quantity. For multiple pens, the standard engraving, signature, and logo costs $7.50 per pen. For custom corporate orders requiring a business logo or distinct graphic instead of standard text, there is a one-time engraving set-up fee of $70.
Can you return a personalized fountain pen? +
No, you can’t return or get a refund for a personalized pen. Once we engrave a pen, it’s officially yours forever. We can’t offer returns or refunds on custom-engraved pens, so double-check your text and nib selection before hitting checkout. If you're on the fence about which model to pick, reach out to our team first. We'd much rather help you choose the right pen today than have you stuck with a customized regret tomorrow.
Does engraving void a fountain pen's warranty? +
Engraving does not automatically void a fountain pen's warranty, but coverage varies by manufacturer, so it's worth a look before you engrave an expensive pen. Most warranties cover defects in the pen itself rather than anything we add to the outside, so a pen that needs to be replaced will not include the personalization. Which fountain pens can be engraved? +
More than 1,000 of them, all in-house, including Pilot, Parker, Waterman, and Lamy. Some pens are off the table because of their material, their finish, or the manufacturer's own restrictions. A textured resin or a heavily patterned barrel often won't take a clean mark, and there's no sense putting a poor engraving on a good pen. We don’t engrave only fountain pens: our full engraved pens collection covers rollerballs and ballpoints too.
How long does engraving take before the pen ships? +
While most items are in stock and ship within 1-2 business days, personalized pens do take additional time. Since we have an in-house engraving department, delays are minimal. Most personalized pens are engraved and shipped within 72 hours of order placement. For larger corporate orders of 20 pens or more, we may need additional time to set up, provide digital proofs, and quality-check each item. If you have a time-sensitive order, please indicate your need-by date in the order comments or contact us after placing the order.
Can you engrave a company logo on fountain pens? +
Yes. On qualifying pens, our in-house engraving department can handle pre-production samples and quantities up to a certain size. Color screen or pad printing can be a viable option to match your company logo colors, but order minimums apply to these processes. To obtain a price quote for these options and for orders over $500, please contact our corporate concierge team.
