Lamy Ballpoint Pens

You can spot the iconic German-designed Lamy ballpoint from across the room, and that's half the fun of the pen. The Safari, AL-Star, and Vista share the molded triangular grip that helps stop your hand from tiring, and every model but the Pico runs on one easy-to-find refill, the large-capacity M16. Want metal in hand? The Studio delivers on that. If you're after a pocket pen, the capless Pico disappears until you need it. Whichever body you love, it'll write like a Lamy.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Lamy ballpoint pens different from others? +

Lamy's functional German design carries over into the hardware itself. The Safari and AL-Star use Lamy's molded triangular grip, which most other ballpoint pens do without. Lamy's ballpoint pens range runs on two proprietary refills (the M16 and the M22), so replacements stay simple. The lineup climbs from the ABS-plastic Safari to the Makrolon-and-steel Lamy 2000, but all feel part of one Bauhaus family.

What are the different Lamy ballpoint models? +

Lamy spans over ten model lines, from everyday plastic and aluminum pens up to metal-bodied design pieces. The Safari (ABS plastic) is the anchor and the most recognized, joined by the aluminum AL-Star, the clear demonstrator Vista, the slim Noto, the brushed-steel Logo, and the entry twist-action Xevo. Above them sit the all-metal Studio, the Makrolon-bodied Lamy 2000, and the pocket-sized Pico. The AL-Star EMR and the Safari EMR Twinpen round out the line as digital styluses for tablet writing.

What's the difference between the Safari and AL-Star ballpoints? +

Both share the same shape, molded triangular grip, spring clip, and M16 refill, so the writing experience is similar. The Safari is made of molded ABS plastic, so is the lighter and more affordable of the two, while the AL-Star's anodized aluminum feels a touch heavier and, frankly, fancier. For an in-depth look at these models, read our comprehensive comparison blog post. Generally, we would pick the Safari for its light weight and bold colors and the AL-Star for its cool metal feel.

Which Lamy ballpoint is best for everyday writing? +

The Safari. It's light, tough enough to live in a bag or pocket, runs on the easily accessible M16 refill, and has a triangular grip that keeps your hand from tiring. The Safari also comes in the widest run of colors and special editions, so selecting the right one for your desk is easy.

What do you get from the 2000 or Studio over the Safari? +

A denser, dressier pen: the Lamy 2000's Makrolon body, a fiberglass-reinforced polycarbonate resin, pairs with brushed stainless steel and a push-button top. The Studio has a metal body, a twist mechanism, and a sleek, formal profile. Both still run the same M16 refill as the Safari.

What refill do Lamy ballpoint pens use? +

Almost the entire range uses the M16. The exception is Pico, which takes the compact M22, sized for its shorter body. Head to our Lamy refills for both. The M16 comes in fine, medium, and broad points, in black, blue, and red colors. If you want to experiment, Monteverde makes M16-compatible refills.

Do Lamy ballpoints use a twist or a click mechanism? +

It depends on the model: the Safari, AL-Star, and Vista are click retractables with a top button, and the Lamy 2000 uses a spring-clip click. The Xevo and Studio twist open instead. The Pico is its own special case, with a one-push mechanism that expands the barrel from pocket size to full writing length.

Do Lamy ballpoints have the molded triangular grip? +

The Safari, AL-Star, Vista, and Xevo all carry the triangular grip, which positions your thumb and first two fingers the same way every time. The metal Studio, Lamy 2000, and the clip-free Pico have plain, round sections instead. The triangular grip is a feature writers tend to love or hate, so if you're unsure, the Safari is an easy way to find out.

Which Lamy ballpoint is best to carry in a pocket? +

We like the Pico for its capless design that closes down to about 9 cm and expands to a full-length pen with one push. It has no clip to snag and sits comfortably in a purse or pocket. When extended, it writes much like a standard pen rather than a stubby mini, so you're not trading comfort for size.
